Dreams Come True Farm 2011 BVDC Show Photos

On June 12, 2011 under the auspices of our trainer, Suzy Stafford, we attended our very first ADS show, the 17th Annual Brandywine Carriage Driving Show at Fair Hill in Elkton, MD.  Up until this time Sjaantje and I had only done breed shows, so we had the shock of our lives. I will NEVER forget getting into my roadcart and not getting out until 4 1/2 hours later! ADS competitors certainly are a hearty lot--at my usual shows I would normally get in and out of my carriage within a 15 minute time period. By the end of that day, Suzy had taught Sjaantje to stand quietly in the line-up after she danced around in her working class. We competed in the Novice Division, and I certainly was a novice when it came to the cones classes--getting DQed in one and nearly trotting past a set of cones, earning us additional time when we circled back around in another. I certainly have a new-found admiration for drivers who excel in cones and am personally putting much more effort into my mastery of this discipline.
Ever since I saw my first driven dressage test, which took my breath away at its elegance and was done by a Friesian gelding named Roelof, who later came to live in my barn for several years until Ann moved him to their new home in Southern Pines, I had it in my head that I would like to give it a try. Being in my 60s, I don't have the nerve I used to, so marathons intimidate me, and since CDEs are where driven dressage is offered, I didn't expect to have the opportunity to do a driven dressage test. It is wonderful that ADS events offer Super Reinsmanship classes, so my personal triump at this show was not only getting to drive in my first driven dressage test, but also winning it! In my driving world I am very enthusiastic about reinsmanship classes, even though as a rider I never got thrilled about equitation classes.

While I was competing in the Novice Divison my trainer, Suzy Stafford, was competing in the Single Horse Division with her very nice Morgan mare, PVF Peace of Mind. Doing her usual outstanding job, Suzy won her Super Reinsmanship class, which put both of us into the Reinsmanship Challenge Class--student and teacher. I tried very hard to do my best to win, but naturally it just didn't happen--Suzy won, and I was runner-up, so I didn't embarrass her;-) Suzy also won her Division Championship and theshow High Point Morgan Horse Award.

Suzy's friend, Lisa Tossey, was there and also took photos of us. She is the photographer who took the above line up photo and the ones below it. You certainly can tell that Sjaantje enjoys the cones!
