Earlier this year, another child, who is now five-years-old, received treatment through medicinal marijuana. His condition is similar to Matthew's, and Dr. Zinsmeister said both parents have told him that he is doing well.
Some children that are diagnosed with tumors have spread to other organs are told remove their tumors without further treatment. This can be an easy decision but not a life-saving one, Dr. Zinsmeister said.
He said that patients need a balance of both effective treatments and palliative care.
In his opinion, the current recommendation in United States is that only about 20 percent of breast cancer patients would benefit from surgery, which is a difficult task because it has little to no success rate, Dr. Zinsmeister said.
Cancer patients suffering from other conditions – such as HIV-infected AIDS patients, veterans experiencing PTSD or people living with Alzheimer's disease – may need more aggressive treatments because they can be more difficult to eradicate in the body. Treatment involving medical marijuana oil and cannabis plants has many similarities with medical marijuana. Both are legal and there no known side effects.
